Dugong Lodge

Dugong Beach Lodge is situated in the idyllic Vilanculos Wildlife Sanctuary. This sanctuary covers 30 000 hectares of pristine marine and wildlife territory. Guests at this luxurious Mozambique lodge are treated to a diverse eco-system of bush, wetland, white powder white beaches and crystal clear waters.

This Mozambique accommodation is set in on the beach providing guests with spectacular views. Guests stay in luxury chalets and villas overlooking the scenic ocean. A generator is used for electricity due to Dugong Beach Lodge's remoteness. The generator runs during the morning and again at sunset for a few hours.

Guests can enjoy delicious meals at the restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. An island style bar serves a wide range of drinks, making it the ideal place to watch the sun set.

The water surrounding Dugong Beach Lodge is ideal for divers and snorkeling. Shallow and deep water reefs reveal beautiful creatures such as Green and Leatherback Turtle, Sailfish, and Manta Ray to name a few. Big deep-sea game fishing of marlin and barracuda is truly spectacular and the large flocks of flamingos and pelicans are a sight to behold.

Relax and enjoy the luxury of Dugong Beach Lodge, situated on the Indian Ocean coastline of Mozambique, within one of the most unique marine and wildlife sanctuaries - "The Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary".

Just 10 luxuriously appointed framed tented chalets with hardwood floors and Jekka thatched grass canopies offer an understated elegance and simplicity.

General Information:
Solar Power/Generator
Due to the remoteness of Dugong Beach Lodge power is obtained from a combination of solar and generator power. The generator operates for a few hours as the sun begins to set until approximately half an hour after the last guest has gone to bed. Limited essential lighting & ceiling fan can still operate after the generator has been switched off due to solar power.

Water
The water has been professionally tested and although it is safe for drinking, mineral water is available.
Wading:
Please note that you may be required to wade to the transfer boat depending on the tide. Please ensure that you are prepared and correctly dressed for this – therefore sandals and easy roll up pants or shorts are advised.

Vilanculos is approximately 700km north of Maputo. Daily flights are available from OR Tambo International to Vilanculos. The trip from the Airport to the boat takes approximately 10 min and guests are transported in a 14-seater minibus. The boat transfer to Dugong Beach Lodge takes approximately 45 minutes. Transfers must be booked at the time of making a reservation and are charged separately.

We have very recently visited Dugong Lodge, as part of our honeymoon. We stayed 5 nights. Dugong Lodge has undergone some renovations and is looking beautiful.
Yes the power comes from a generator, but in the rooms this is also backed up by battery powered lights. I'm glad the generator is turned off at night so it is completely quiet.
Yes the water is treated, the only place that the smell was noticeable was in the loo, and frankly I don't spend much time in there! The outside shower was lovely - the water is heated by solar panels.
The accommodation was clean and well presented. The staff were keen and helpful, okay their English is not superb but you have to remember you are in Mozambique and the country is progressing after some difficult times.
All in all we had a fantastic time, and enjoyed every minute of our stay. We made use of the free faciliites around us - walking, bird watching, sea kayaking and snorkelling, and interspersed this with activities that we paid for - day trip to an island, wakeboarding and dhow trip to fishing village.

This place is lovely if you want privacy and peace and quiet. The lodge itself has only about 10 rooms, so you'll definitely get away from all the noise of a city. It feels almost like you have the place to yourself.
There is some snorkeling off the beach right in front of the hotel, but no reefs.
The chalets are fantastic with huge bath. We stayed in a beach chalet which is just steps from the beach (although none of the chalets are more than a minute's walk). Huge bed with elegant mosquito netting, private covered deck and awesome comfortable lounge chairs, large bathroom with huge tub and enclosed toilet, and private outside shower which is great after swimming or just to cool off.
The tap water has a strong sulfurish (rotten egg) smell, which can put some people off, but it doesn't take away from the overall appeal of the place, and bottled water is provided free of charge for drinking. And if you want to take a bath, simply put some of the bath salts (provided) in and it is barely noticeable.
I think if you are expecting 5-star service you will be disappointed. The service isn't bad...everyone is very nice and helpful, but I think the laid back atmosphere of the place is somewhat reflected in the quality and quantity of service provided. Don't get me wrong, it's a great place and we had a great time...however, there are some things that could be improved.
As for the food, a pretty good selection of food with two choices for dinner each night. As a vegetarian, they still catered to me pretty well (remember you'll have to ask and sometimes remind them). I think I'd have to give the food about a 4 out of 5 stars. They have a wide selection of drinks too with very reasonable prices and the bar is quite cozy and bartenders great.

Unique Qualities: Important to note...the place is run by a generator and the electricity goes off morning/mid-day and in the night. If you get bored easily, make sure you bring something to keep you entertained, especially if the weather is bad and you don't want to be outside.
Overall, Dugong is a great place to visit. Relaxing, comfortable, and beautiful.
