Activities at Barra
For the energetic there is loads to do – all within a 5km
radius. The quad bike trail ride is a tranquil two hour jaunt through
the lush habitat to Tofu and back – this includes a stop at
the local craft market.
Inhambane is world-renowned for its spectacular dive sites, scuba-divers
from far and wide explore the continuous wonder of the numerous
reefs which are alive with a profusion of sea life – from
manta-rays to pansy shells. A number of resorts in the area offer
resort dive courses – for those who prefer to stay on top
of the water – the snorkeling is outstanding!
The Ocean Safari adventure on offer by various outfits in the area
is a truly memorable experience – especially if you are able
to spot and swim with whale sharks – the gentle giants of
the sea. For the jet-ski enthusiasts, you have a choice of riding
the calm bay waters or tearing across the ocean swells.
Go for pure nostalgia reminiscent of ancient times – hire
a dhow and sail across the bay to Maxixe where the skipper will
wait while you dine at the popular harbour restaurant in Maxixe.
The numerous restaurants in the vicinity all offer a wide selection
of the freshest seafood cooked in the traditional Portuguese fashion
– or buy your own succulent seafood straight from the dhow
fisherman when the fleet lands on the beach.
For the less energetic, while away your days strolling on the soft,
white sands, collecting seashells or hop aboard the catamaran cruise
and sail away into the sunset!

The district boasts one of the largest plantations of palm trees
worldwide and this vegetation combined with the endless pristine
beaches, soft sea breezes and sparkling clear ocean give this stretch
of the peninsula a rare taste of that balmy island fever.
Originally named Terra de Boa Gente or ‘Land of the Gentle
People’ by Vasco da Gama in the late 1400’s, the sheltered,
scenic bay of Inhambane is one of the oldest settlements on the
East Coast and was, in its heyday, a significant port. Today, the
district still houses the largest fleet of working dhows in Mozambique.
