Guide To The Zambezia Province

Quelimane & Zalala Beach

The trading port of Quelimane is the capital of the Zambezia province built on the banks of the Bons Sinais river. The Bons Sinais river used to be connected to the Zambezi river but is now silted up and was named by Gamo da Vasco while on his search for India.

Some of the largest palm trees in the world can be found in Quelimane, but the beach at Zalala some 45km north of Quelimane has more to offer tourists than the city of Quelimane, although if you find yourself with time to spare in Quelimane try a visit to the old Church of Our Lady of Liberation.

Quelimane airport connects with other areas of Mozambique and there are regular flights to Quelimane from Maputo.

Milange

On the border with Malawi is the small town of Milange, surrounded on both sides of the border by tea plantations. The only access is by vehicle and 4x4 is reccomended since the roads are currently all corrigated gravel with some sandy patches which can turn to mudholes after heavy rain. The best accommodation options are available on the Malawi side in the forestry reserve on the side of Mt. Mulanje where tourism is more developed (you are unlikely to meet any other tourists on the Mozambican side). Milange is 200km on gravel roads from the next available accommodation in Mozambique (at Gurué or Macuba) so plan your visit carefully!
