When To Visit

Although there are regional differences in climate throughout Mozambique, the highest temperatures are during the rainy season (November to April). April to November form Mozambique's Dry Season when temperatures are more comfortable. South African holiday seasons can be very busy in the south of the country and are best avoided (roughly these times coincide with Easter, Christmas & New Year and to a lesser degree in July).

How to Get There

Fly in to Maputo in Mozambique or Johannesburg in South Africa - try STA Travel for flights from the UK & Ireland, Continental Europe, USA or Australia & New Zealand. Domestic flights around the country are operated by LAM - Linhas Aéreas de Mocambique, the national airline of Mozambique and charters can easily be arranged. Many resorts and islands are best reached by chartered flights. Many packages include air transfers from Johannesburg. Mozambique can also easily be reached by road from Johannesburg where vehicles can be hired, or take the Intercape Mainliner or Translux bus to Maputo. Transfers to accommodation can be arranged from the airport in Maputo and from major towns such as Inhambane and Vilanculos for those flying in, and from the border post at Kasi for those traveling overland without a vehicle.

Health & Safety

Most of Mozambique has Malaria the whole year round and prophylactics should be taken, Remember that the most effective prevention is not to be bitten and in any case mosquito bites can be very irritating so always sleep under a mosquito net (provided by most accommodation), carry a good insect repellent and try to cover up before it gets dark. Proof of yellow fever and cholera vaccinations are required and a number of other immunisations are also advisable and travelers should ask their own doctor or visit a tropical disease centre for advice before travel.

Travel insurance should be taken out covering evacuation to Johannesburg or your home country in a medical emergency. Some island resorts and packages include medical evacuation from the island. Special insurance may be needed to cover particular activities such as scuba diving.

The years of civil unrest in Mozambique are now behind us, however those on a self-drive journey through the more remote areas of Mozambique should be aware that the less travelled routes may still have landmines so stick to the main roads / routes used regularly rather than taking to unused tracks.
