Diving & Snorkelling

There is an abundance of marine life in the Indian Ocean waters surrounding Quilalea including Turtles, Dolphins, Potato Groupers, Moray eels and large pelagics and corals are plentiful and healthy, teeming with a variety of colourful reef fishes and nudibranchs. Dive sites are accessible both from shore and by boat.

Snorkelling equipment for Quilalea guests is supplied at no extra charge and introductory dives are available for beginners on our house reef off the beach. A wide selection of PADI certifications is available for all levels of divers and guided dives range from easy shallow reef dives to more challenging wall dives for those with greater experience.

Fishing

Fishing at Quilalea is a year round activity subject to, but rarely affected by, weather conditions.

Game fish include Bonito, Barracuda, Yellow-fin Tuna, Trevally, Wahoo & Dorado. Billfish such as Marlin and Sailfish are seasonal and are tagged and released whenever possible. Big game fishing is conducted from Quilalea's 30ft Bertram’s Express using Shimano, Daiwa and Penn International rods and reels and a wide range of lures. Half day and Full Day charters are available.

Traditional hand line fishing can be arrangd outside the reserve with local fishermen.

Salt water fly fishing can be organized on a strictly catch and release basis

Bird Watching

A wide variety of Bird Species make their home in the Quirimbas National Park including Mangrove Fish Eagles, Flamingos, Herons, Plovers, Coucals, and Kingfishers. Many of these birds can be seen on the Island of Quilalea and the nearby mangrove forests. A pocket guide for island walks is available to Quilalea guests.

Whale & Dolphin Watching

Humpback whales pass through the Quirimbas islands on their annual migration between July and November. Spinner and Humpback Dolphins can be seen in the area year round. If you're lucky you will see the whales from the island, boat trips to go in search of the whales can also be organised.

Canoeing / Kayaking

Explore the coastal bays and beaches around Quilalea in a Two-person canoes and single person Kayak. Available at no extra charge to quilalea guests they are a great way to discover the secret channels through the mangroves on the neighbouring island of Sencar.

Dhow Cruises

Quilalea's traditional sailing dhow islocally built by hand and comfortably furnished. A dhow cruise is the idyllic way to watch the sun setting over the sea.

Picnics

Guests can choose to have private picnics at one of Quilalea's beaches or a romantic candlelit supper overlooking the sea. Picnics can also be organised on the neighbouring island of Sencar. This service is complimentary to Quilalea guests.

Massage

Karma Salaama, massage. Described as the “best massage bed in the world”, the shelter is built in to the natural rock and above the beach with high tide water lapping one to relaxation. The Mozambican Massage is an essential ingredient of the Quilálea experience.

Excursion To Ibo Island

The best known island of the Quirimbas Archipelago is Ibo. Half day excursions are offered to guests and can be combined with fishing or diving.

Excursion To Sencar

Explore the mangrove channels of the uninhabited island of Sencar by canoe or enjoy the islands walks and coastal trails. Visits to Sencar are at no additional cost to Quilalea guests.

Excursion To Quirimba Island

A short visit to the nearby island of Quirimba will introduce you to the local island lifestyle, give you an insight to traditional village life and a closer view of the age-old method of hut building.
