Pemba & the Quirimba Islands

There are plenty of accommodation options in Pemba and on the islands of the Quirimbas archipelago.

Guludo

Guludo is situated north of Pemba, accessible by 4x4 or boat from the islands, Rolas island is just offshore from here, and further out are Matemo Island and Ibo Island, both of which have accommodation options. The long stretches of beach in this area are usually deserted, save for the occasional fisherman.

Guludo Base Camp

The staff and British owners at Guludo Base Camp will award you a warm welcome, in the words of the Guardian Newspaper (UK) in 2005 "Guludo Base Camp is charming, a resort that's kicking the norm: it's eco, ethical and bang on."

Accommodation is in sheltered mosquito proof tents, and this is a great place for scuba diving, bush safaris and community discovery. Transfers are available from Pemba by road or from Matemo or Ibo Islands by boat.

Pangane Beach

Pangane Beach is situated north of Pemba on a beautiful palm fringed, sandy peninsula. Access is by 4x4 only of by boat from the islands. There is no bookable accommodation here but if you turn up in your own vehicle and want to stay you can try the following:

Campismo Achime

Basic accommodation is available in two small chalets, each with a double bed for around US$15 per person. Alternatively camping is approximately US$5 per person.

Facilities are very basic bush toilets and cold showers. Mozambican style meals such as coconut rice and fish, calamari or cray fish can be prepared on request by Maimuna, Achime's wife, expect to pay around US$3 - US$5 for an evening meal and US$1 - US$2 for cooked eggs at breakfast.
