My family and I stayed for two (2) nights at the Southern Sun Hotel in Maputo, Mozambique (formerly the Holiday Inn).
The location is great away from the downtown Maputo noise and traffic. The hotel itself is very luxurious although the rooms are smaller than most luxury hotels. The housekeeping is excellent, and the workout facilities are above average, even for our two sons.
We had dinner in the restaurant and found the food to be very good. The bar in the lobby is very busy, and offers both drinks and light food if you need a snack. The hotel is located adjacent to several restaurants/bars on the beach, so you have other options for dinner if you wish.
The front desk staff was most helpful with our numerous requests, and the free secure parking for our rental car was a big plus.
I would highly recommend this hotel for business or leisure travelers.

I visited in August which must be a quiet time in Maputo as the hotel was not busy at all. This really contributed to the lack of atmosphere. Staff were helpful and friendly and always ready to smile if you engaged them. Food was average, the buffet in the evenings was poor in some respects and you should opt for the a la carte (which I didnt know about until the last night!!) Breakfast is excellent with a choice of cold buffet and freshly cooked eggs in the style of your choice with some very suspicious looking sausages and bacon.The pool was empty when I visited it was being repaired, shame that as it looks like it owuld be relaxing to swim and look aour at the ocean at the same time. Dont swim in the sea by the way as the 2 'jetties' that stick out into the ocean on either side of the hotel property are sewage ducts for part of the city (it doesnt smell I'm told as the jetties go out a long way). Overall the stay was good. It was about value for money by european standard. I may return but may opt for a different hotel nearer to the city with a bit more atmosphere.
