The bar was designed and decorated by an inspired young African artist, who chose to design a surreal landscape. The end effect is a perfect antidote to the stress of city life and invitation to let your thoughts float away on an exotic journey along the shores of East Africa. Why not sample the famous 'Catembe' punch that originated here? And check out the regular live music performances!

We pack picnic baskets for your excursions or boating trips. And when you return, our cooks will be glad to prepare for you the fish you have caught, while you watch. Or, why not prepare it yourself at our outdoor braai while you enjoy a sundowner from the pool bar.

Most of our guests enjoy the opportunity to relax by the pool or stroll on the beach. However, Catembe is also an opportunity to discover a world of fascinating contrasts and natural beauty to the rhythm of the authentic village lifestyle. Attractions include hiking trails, birding trails and quad bike trails with local guides.

We will be happy to arrange boating trips for game fishing, diving or snorkeling or a picnic on a deserted beach on Inhaca and Portuguese islands. The marine life and corals surrounding these islands are among the most pristine in the world.

Catembe is the perfect base from which to explore the near-by Maputo Elephant Reserve that is famed for its bird life and elephants slated as a potential Natural World Heritage Site. Catembe Gallery Hotel commits itself to help protect this amazing natural heritage and will tailor its excursions to meet the strictest environmental and ecological standards.
For those who travel further afield, Catembe Gallery Hotel is a gateway to the reknown game and nature reserves of Swaziland and KwaZulu Natal (South Africa), including the future Maputaland transfrontier conservation area.

Trips to the Elephant Reserve
The Maputo Special Reserve is one of the most beautiful and yet poorly known conservation areas in Southern Africa . The large variety of habitats includes mangrove forest, tidal wetlands, large treeless grass plains and dense sandforest. This mosaic of biomes supports an impressive diversity of plants, bird species, elephants, hippos, crocodiles and antelopes etc. More than 200 elephants were recorded in 2002; on our trips we use local guides and rangers who have high sighting rates. We leave with a luxury game viewer vehicle from Catembe Gallery Hotel at 6.00 for a day of ecotourism and beach activities. The daytrip includes breakfast, lunch on the beach, entrance fees, guide and petrol and is USD 85 pp.

Nesting of the Turtles
During season from November to January, the loggerhead and leatherback turtles return from the ocean to the beach in the Elephant Reserve to lay about 150 eggs. We leave around 16.30 – return midnight (stay at Catembe Gallery Hotel). As this is a night activity, previous booking and minimum number of people are required.

Catembe Gallery Hotel is a pleasant hotel that provides a clean room with a good restaurant, modern bathroom with lovely view of Maputo city skyline and with quite decent food for dinner and breakfast.
We had crossed easily and it was fast on the water taxi and we heard that they run from Sunrise to Sundown, If you want to walk to the hotel along the beach it took us only 45mins (leisurely Walk). The hotel also has got a minibus that they use to Pick clients from the Jetty.

This is a beautiful location, an original hotel and a good restaurant. We stayed here twice once on the way to the beaches of Northern Mozambique and then again before flying home again, and loved it both times. On each occasion we had different rooms, but both were charming and with the same great sea view. The prawns we had were the best we had in Mozambique – we understand the place is justly famous for grilled prawns and indeed the plate we had at the hotel’s Marisol restaurant is the best we had in Maputo. It is especially nice with some green wine a local tradition that is a throwback to the Portuguese era. The garden has a tropical feel and leads you straight to the beach which tourists share with some local fishermen. Great photo ops especially early in the morning when the sea is flat as glass and the fishermen stand shoulder to shoulder to haul in their nets and bring in their catch.
