Game Drives & Activities
at Elephant Plains Game Lodge, Sabi Sand
Exciting Safari Activities: Elephant Plains Game
Lodge is situated in the 65, 000 hectare Sabi Sand Wildtuin, which
forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park. The Sabi Sand Wildtuin
was set up in the 1950's by a group of private landowners who dropped
the fences between their properties in order to create a larger
area for the animals to roam freely. The reserve is named after
its two main rivers, the Sabi and Sand Rivers, which both flow to
the south of Elephant Plains.
The Elephant Plains Game Lodge is situated on the banks of the
dry Manyeleti riverbed. The Elephant Plains vehicles traverse an
area of over 4500 ha. This encompasses clay-based plains, broad-leafed,
hilly woodland, interspersed with dolerite ridges and mature riverine
habitats, creating a fantastic biodiversity of flora and fauna.
Here you can see Africa's Big Five and you might even come across
rarer predators, such as the cheetah and wild dog.
Twice daily Big Five game-drives
Your experienced game ranger and local Shangaan tracker are keen
to share their extensive knowledge and love of the African bush
with you. There are two game drives per day in open top Landrovers.
Each drive lasts about three hours with an intermediate break.
During the morning game drive break you will enjoy coffee and rusks
and in the afternoon your ranger will find a suitable spot where
you can enjoy the stunning views, while enjoying a sundowner. After
sundowners your tracker will use the spotlight to find nocturnal
animals before returning to the lodge for dinner. Your ranger will
discuss the various game drive regulations before you leave camp.
During game drives you will note that the rangers sometimes drive
off of the road and into the bush. Elephant Plains rangers and trackers
work in accordance to guidelines set out by Sabi Sand ecologist,
Jonathan Swart and only allow off-roading in certain areas and with
special precautions. The Elephant Plains rangers do not drive over
sensitive areas, will only drive over small trees if they are encroachment
species and if necessary, and will do brush packing afterwards to
limit the impact on the environment.
Interpretive bush walks
The daily bush walk takes place after breakfast. Your ranger will
confirm the time with you during breakfast. Please take note that
you will be accompanied by either your ranger or tracker.
During the Elephant Plains bush walk you will have the opportunity
to take a closer look at animal tracks, birds, different types of
grasses and trees, as well as any smaller details of the bush that
might fascinate you.
Please take note of the following:
Guests are not allowed to leave the camp and walk alone. For safety
reasons, we unfortunately do not allow children aged 16 and under,
to go on the bush walk. Should you wish, we could organize a ranger
or tracker to take the children on a mini bush walk inside the camp
area.
Guests over the age of 60 would be required to provide a medical
certificate stating that they are in good health and fit to go on
a bush walk. Please also ensure that you bring closed shoes, neutral
coloured clothing, a hat, sunscreen as well as insect repellent.
