Ibo Island Lodge is situated on the Indian Ocean island of Ibo Island, just north of the small town of Pemba in the pristine Quirimbas Archipelago, Northern Mozambique.

Ibo Island has been described as one of the most unique and magical islands in the world and is the perfect place to explore the Quirimbas Archipelago and National Park in Northern Mozambique.

Once Mozambique’s mighty trading centre, Ibo Island has remained all but forgotten to the outside world for almost a century.

When visiting Ibo it is not just the natural beauty of the island that strikes you. It is the beauty of the people. It’s the mystery of the ancient buildings, old forts, history and fascinating stories crunching under your feet.
It’s the slow and steady dhows that drift across the horizon, tracking the tides as they have done for centuries.

This is a place that time forgot, and now people are returning to know it again.
Guests partake in a multitude of experiences. Become immersed in the unchanged, ancient culture of Ibo and the chance to interact with wonderfully hospitable islanders.

Eat breakfast on a perfect sandbank beach surrounded by warm, turquoise sea. Then snorkel through delicate corals and tropical fish. Discover a coastline fringed by tropical islands on an ancient Arab Dhow or quietly kayak through the cool mangrove forest and winding canals where the bird life is abundant.

Snack on cashew nuts and dine on the freshest of seafood of every description. And don’t forget to relax at one of the pools, refresh the senses with a frosty Mozambican beer and soak up the unique atmosphere that is Ibo Island Lodge.

Ibo Island Lodge is located on the prime waterfront site, overlooking the sunset and views and where romantic dhows sail out to sea on each high tide.

The lodge encompasses magnificent mansions each over one hundred years old with walls over a meter thick and lofty high ceilings.

Ibo Island is a potential World Heritage Site and therefore the rooms have been designed to incorporate the original architecture and style of the old buildings.

The lodge has spectacular views over the bay and into the National Park beyond and accommodates guests in beautifully simple, yet elegant rooms with indigenous solid teak and mahogany furniture handcrafted by the people of Ibo.
All rooms have en-suite facilities with twin basins and large marble showers. Some have baths and outside showers.

- Large windows for sea breeze
- King size extra length hand crafted bed with mosquito net (twin beds are also available)
- Indigenous teak and mahogany handcrafted furniture
- Solid mahogany wardrobe with hangers
- Chest safe with lock

- Linen gown for use whilst on the island

Ibo lodge has two swimming pools set in tropical gardens planted with frangipani, bougainvillea and palm trees. Our lounge is perfect for reading or taking tea in the afternoons and there is a private dining room as well as a roof terrace restaurant with an open-air lounge area for after dinner drinks under the stars.

Power at Ibo Island lodge is supplied by two generators. Power is available at certain times of the day and night and hours are subject to change according to weather and lodge requirements.
Fuel requirements of our generators make a large eco impact on the footprint of the lodge. We aim to conserve as much energy as possible without impacting on your comfort. Generator times as well as a full lodge briefing are given during guest check in by management.

Relax, swim, snorkel, kayak, explore or photograph. There is a multidude of things to see and do on Ibo.

A fascinating, often emotional journey recounting the history of Ibo.

Sand bank beach: One of the most beautiful and pristine beach in the Quirimbas Archipelago is closely accessed by boat from the island, included in the rate, and is one of Ibo's best kept secrets.

Please note that presently Ibo Island Lodge does NOT offer scuba diving as part of its guest activities. It is possible for Ibo to arrange diving at neighboring properties subject to availability. A series of recky dives have been undertaken in the marine area of the Quirimbas National park which includes 11 islands and is one of the richest, most biologically diverse marine environments in Africa.

Sea kayaking & guided mangrove excursions: Fully guided, guests will be taken into Ibo's lush, fertile mangrove channels to understand more about this precious ecosystem and the outstanding bird and marine life it supports.

Traditional sailing dhow safaris and cruises: Take a sunset cruise or day trip on a magnificent hand made traditional teak sailing dhow.

Cultural and community interactive experiences: Community projects are operated by Ibo Island Lodge.

Ibo Island has been described as one of the most romantic islands in the world and time spent on this little palm and coral fringed island is really special.
