are available in the bay area that are sure to provide you with enough
excitement to keep you busy for quite a while. If you want a more relaxing
holiday, then walks on the beach, or up to the lighthouse, will give you
a chance of seeing turtles laying eggs (October to December), or some
of Ponta's dolphins surfing in the waves.
Diving
Diving is one of Ponta do Ouro's main attractions. One of the top ten
best diving sites in the world, Ponta do Ouro offers a wide range of reefs
to dive, ranging from 12m to 55m. Equipment can be rented from most diving
operators.
Fishing
There are many excellent fishing opportunities at Ponta do Ouro.
Rock and surf, deep sea and fly fishing are all options worth exploring.
Catches from the shore include Pompano, Rock Cod, Sand Sharks, Stumpnose
and Kingfish exceeding 20kg as well as many other species. Fishing from
a boat/jet-ski/kayak you can hope to catch Couta, Wahoo, Tuna, Dorado
and possibly Amberjack.
No bottom fishing allowed. Catching of Potato Bass is strictly prohibited
as well as the capture of reef fish. Permits for fishing as well as boat/jet-ski
launching permits can be obtained from the maritime officer (normally
found at the boat launching area in his white shirt).
Directions
The Kosi Bay border post is the closest and best way to get to Ponta do
Ouro. It is open from 08:00 till 17:00, 7 days a week. The last few kilometres
between Mar e Sol and the border must be crossed using a 4x4. This is
very important as the roads are very soft and sandy. Normal vehicles will
not be allowed to make the journey. It is also important that you let
your tyres down before you leave the border (between 1.2 and 1.5 bars).
If you do not own a 4x4, you can park your car at the border at a cost
of R30 per day at Skelm's Parking (082 624 6518) which is secure. You
can arrange for a border transfer to Mar e Sol.
From Johannesburg we recommend the following route (approximately 7 hours
non-stop):
Witbank - N12 via East Rand or N4 via Pretoria
Hendrina - N11
Ermelo - N11
Piet Retief - N2
Pongola - N2
Jozini Dam (Turn left off N2 go over mountain pass and over dam wall)
Follow signs that say Kosi Bay until you see border post signs, there
is one right turn at a T junction.
Past Tembe Elephant Reserve
Last town eManguzi - good Spar, banks and fuel - 28km from border
Please make sure you leave enough time to get to the border. The last
portion of the journey is on dirt road. There is also a possibility of
holdups due to road works in the area.
Shops
There is one main shopping centre in Ponta do Ouro which sells all the
basics. Bread, sugar, milk, chocolates, cereal, tinned food, bait and
many other odds and ends. At the open air market you can find some essential
fresh vegetables such as tomatoes and lettuce. Near the market you can
also find a butchery which sells meat from both South Africa and Mozambique.
The butchery also sells bait, cheese, butter and a few bits of fishing
tackle.
If you find yourself with the urge to fish, but without tackle, the shop
at Praia de Ouro Sul's Bar (recommended by the way) sells rods, lures,
hooks and quite a few other useful items.
Cash and credit cards
Rands are readily acceptable in Ponta do Ouro, and most prices are displayed
in rands as well as metacais, however there are no ATMs and very few restaurants
and shops take credit cards. Please make sure you bring enough cash with
you to last the trip. Alternatively, if you need cash, you can travel
back over the border to eManguzi which is 28km from the border to get
some.
Boat
Mar e Sol has a wash bay and enough space for you to keep your boat. You'll
have to purchase a license from the maritime officer before you are permitted
to launch however. Launching is done from the beach in the bay just below
Mar e Sol. Quad biking is allowed for person above the ages of 16 years.
Cell phone reception
T here are 1 or 2 bars of Vodacom signal at Mar e Sol. Alternatively,
for a better signal, the top parking lot at Mar e Sol gives 3 bars of
Vodacom signal. If you have roaming enabled, you will receive 5 bars almost
anywhere in Ponta do Ouro.

in the village.
