Its long white sand beaches are not the unique attraction of the region: the magnificent coral reefs that you find just a couple of meters off the shores of the Bay are one of the most beautiful spots of the world for fans of scuba diving or snorkeling. Pemba (formerly Porto Amelia) is a harbour city in Mozambique and the capital of the province of Cabo Delgado. It is located on the canal of Mozambique (Indian Ocean), 1 666 km (2 450 km by road) northeast of Maputo. Before the Portuguese colonisation, the area was visited by Malagasy and Swahili fishermen. After an first attempt in the middle of the XIXth century, the Portuguese finally occupied the site in 1898 when the company of Niassa settled and held the power to administer the territory. The town was founded in 1904 and given the name of Porto Amelia in tribute to the last Queen of Portugal: Amélie d’Orléans. Porto Amelia became the capital of the province of Cabo Delgado in 1929. Porto Amelia was elevated to the rank of vila on 19 December 1934 and cidade on October 18, 1958. The town developed around its harbour. It was finally renamed Pemba in 1976, after the independence of Mozambique. The inhabitants of the city are mainly Makuas, Makonde and Mwanis. The spoken language is mainly the Makua, although Portuguese is widespread. The city is famous for its Portuguese colonial architecture. In the centre of Pemba, a local market offers products of art and crafts, such as traditional silverware. Located in the Bay of Pemba, the city has always been sufficiently distant from the major trade routes, which allowed it to preserve its natural beauty. Pemba Beach (Wimbe) was designated as the "most beautiful beach of Africa" by the magazine Africa 24 Magazine.
