Ideally situated on the Eastern banks of the lagoon in Bilene. You may be in Bilene, but you could just as well be on a remote island any where in the world. That is the impression Mahelane Lodge offers, as it is only a 10 minute boat trip across the lagoon, (away from all the noise and tons of holiday makers).

Our Lodge is privately situated on the eastern banks of the Uembje Lagoon in Bilene, Mozambique. Our Lodge offers privacy to all our guests so that you can experience a tranquil holiday getaway. Our guests can enjoy the many kinds of exciting water activities, from Jet Ski's to boat rides and more!

Enjoy long walks along the white sandy beaches, whilst taking in the breathtaking views of the sunsets in Bilene. At Mahelane Lodge we offer it all! All our chalets are facing the lagoon with splendid view’s and are equipped with air-conditioning.

Our restaurant offers the best Portuguese Cuisine and is sure to tantalize your taste-buds. Most of our staff at the Lodge are able to communicate in English and they are trained to cater to our guest’s every need, ensuring guest satisfaction is constant through out your stay. You are guaranteed to feel welcomed here.

Accommodation at Mahalene Lodge, Bilene

Our chalets are not self-catering. A full A-LA-CARTE restaurant is available.

Chalets 1(sleeps 6)
The main bedrrom has a queen sized bed. The second bedroom has two single beds with a extended sleeping area in the lounge with twwo single beds.

Chalet 7(sleeps 6)
The main bedroom has two single beds. The second bedroom has two single beds with a extended sleeping area in the lounge with two single beds. (perfect for friends a Party of 6!)

Chalets 2, 6,8, 9, 10& 11 (Sleeps 4)
The main bedroom has a queen sized bed. Two single beds in the extended sleeping area.

Chalets 3, 4 & 5 (sleeps 2)

Note: Chalets 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, & 9 are situated higher than the other chalets. Please take note of these chalets when making reservations at the lodge, as elders and very young children may not be able to climb up to these chalets.

Important Information:

* Rates are per chalet per day bed and breakfast
* The Lodge is completely self catered for and no provisions have been made for self catering. There is a full al-a-carte restaurant and bars.
* The Lodge has full electricity and a generator on standby
* Chalets are fitted with air cons in the bedrooms
* Each chalet is equipped with an unstocked small mini bar fridge
* Boat transfers to and from Mahelane Lodge is included in the room rates. Extra trips needed will be charged for per person.

We have a staff complement of 30 people. You will find that, while in a third world country, our staff are polite and while they speak mainly Portuguese, they do try their best to converse in English.

Our chefs are highly qualified and specialize in Mozambique / Portuguese Cuisine. Hamburgers are not sold at the restaurant.

Mahelane Lodge has a wide variety of activities to choose from, deep sea game fishing, open water 1 diving, various water sports, unique play area for the children.

Launching of Boats
Payable to Maritimo (The local Marine Authorities). This includes the inspection and the license for 30 days. Launch of boats is opposite the Petromoc (Petrol Station).

HOW TO GET THERE

Before Departure
VISAS are no longer required if you have a South African Passport.
* A valid driver’s license must be carried on your person at all times.
* If you are towing a trailer or boat, you are required to attach a triangle on the front of your vehicle.
* You must at all times keep your Certificate of Origin for your vehicle on you.

Mozambique is a malaria area. Contact your Doctor or visit your Pharmacist to obtain prophylactics and repellents in order to keep you and your family safe from this killer disease. Body repellent lotions and sticks are more effective than sprays.

At the Border

ON THE SOUTH AFRICAN SIDE
Complete a vehicle temporary export document, have it stamped and then proceed to immigration with your passports.

ON THE MOZAMBICAN SIDE
Proceed to immigration with your passports and pay approx. R 20.00 per person Tourism Tax, then proceed to the Customs desk and present your Temporary Export Permit and pay approx. 30 Meticais (approx. R10) for car papers.

Very important – buy your 3rd party insurance, approx. R150.00 at the Insurance office. An additional payment is to be made of R70.00 for any trailer linked to a vehicle.

We are a CATERED Resort, thus urge guests not to bring their Drinks and Food supplies. We do not have facilities to store additional stocks. But should you require snacks and the like, you are allowed to do so at the value of $ 50.00 per person. You will probably be asked to present your Original Purchase Invoices.

If the value exceeds $ 50.00, you will have to declare your goods and pay import taxes. In order for you to declare, you have to fill in a Bill of Entry form which is done at the Clearing Agents at the South African border post. The Clearing Agent will assist you with further arrangements.

EN ROUTE
If you have passed through the Komatiport Border post, you will pass a Toll Gate, pay 95 Meticais (Approx. R 50.00) .Rands are accepted. The Maputo tollgate you need to travel through will cost 17, 5 Meticais (approx. R6.00).

Radar Speed traps are common in small villages, and you must obey the speed limits and always wear your safety belts. Never entertain bribes if and when stopped by the police, Police wear white uniforms with blue hats.

After the Toll Gate that requires 125 Meticais, you will travel approx. 3km’s where you will see a sign that says XAI-XAI (pronounced Shy-Shy), just before you cross over a large bridge, Turn Left. You will then pass around Maputo. You will get to a Traffic Control, and then go through a small town Manhiça, shortly afterwards another small town Palmeira, after which you will proceed to Macia, from Maputo to Macia you will travel 156 km’s.

At Macia, just after the BP Garage you turn right on a tarred road. Carry on straight for another 33 km’s until you drive straight into Bilene. You will get to a circle, go around the circle and pass the Motel on your left hand side. Carry on straight until you get to a T-junction and Carioca will be in front of you.

YOU HAVE ARRIVED
At Carioca turn right, pass Aquarius on your left and the next beach front restaurant you will see is called Complexo Ferias do Bilene, Across the road you will see a fenced off grass parking to leave your vehicle with 24 hour security watching the vehicles.

On arrival we will send the boat to collect you as well as for any other directions or enquiries you may need. It is advisable that guests arrive by no later that 19:00 as you will need to cross the lagoon and we are not permitted to be crossing the lagoon at night due to the fishermen’s nets being out in the water at night.

Once you are at the Lodge, you will be shown to your chalet, and your luggage will be taken to your chalet for you. You will then be given your key, and we ask you kindly not to misplace your key at any time.

Note: If you bring Jet Ski’s or boats, you will be required to launch them at the Ramp (Opposite the Petrol Station).
