Activities:
Barra and the surrounding area has so many activities for the entire family
to enjoy; it really is the best place to spend your time relaxing under
the sun!
Whale watching:
June until December is whale season at Barra with pods of up to thirty
whales being spotted sailing and breaching off the beach. Whale sharks
also frequent the calm waters of the Inhambane area with regular sightings
of this sought after swimming companion.
Dolphin Watching:
Dolphins are often encountered in the bay between Inhambane and Maxixe
as well as offshore the beach.
Other Activities:
Horse riding, quad trips and coastal flights can also be arranged, subject
to availability and season.
ACTION PACKED
Fishing:
Barra and the surrounding seas have a great many options when it comes
to getting the lines wet; deep sea, bill, game, fly fishing or rock and
surf – something for everyone!
Fishing charters can be arranged around Barra and Tofu.
Remember to pack your tackle!
Spear Fishing:
For those who like their hunting done up close and personal, we have great
hotspots with safe entrance and exit points where the visibility is good
and the prey abound! You will be hunting for hours!
Dhow Trips:
These trips can add to your Mozambique experience; travel to Pansy Island
and Maxixe and with a good chance of spotting dolphins en-route it is
a trip well worth taking.
Diving:
The Barra area is noted for the whale sharks and manta ray species that
can be found in its ocean twelve months of the year and beside these magnificent
creatures the waters teem with life.
Apart from diving for the pleasure and sport Tofu has a research centre,
where research is aimed at studying specifically the whale sharks and
manta rays that are found in these waters. If you are interested in learning
more or want to offer support, contact us for details.
Dr. Andrea Marshall, the senior resident marine scientist, has discovered
a new species of manta ray along the coast of Tofu in 2009. This species
has never before been recorded anywhere else in the world and seem to
be endemic to these shores. Join Dr. Marshall and her team for a dive
with the manta rays or whale sharks and make this an experience of a lifetime!
Some say that this area is the best diving spot in the world… come
and find out for yourself.
Snorkeling:
Snorkeling among the reefs close to the beach is a blast; Barra beach
holds a lot of excitement beneath the surf for the snorkeling enthusiast!
Directions:
If you decide to use the Komatipoort border:-
The male version:
From Gauteng take the N4. In Maputo, turn left at the robot.
Just after the next tollgate you turn left again towards Xai-xai. After
about 400 k’s keep right at the split in the road. That’s
it!
The other version:
The Mozambican side of this border is called Ressano Garcia. Maputo city
centre is 120 km from Ressano Garcia and there are two tollgates along
this well maintained road. If you got through the border quite late and
need to sleep over, there is a guesthouse about 6 km from Ressano Garcia
on the left.
33 km after the first toll road you will come to a set of traffic lights
– turn left and follow the road up to the next toll gate 10 km further.
About three km after this second toll gate is a sign just before a bridge
– over that shows Xai-xai. Take this turnoff left and keep straight.
Once through Maputo, Xai- xai is 200 km further. You will pass Maraquene,
(buy some honey) Manhica, (a woven reed mat is essential when camping
or on the beach) Macia (R20 p.kg for Macadamia nuts) and Chisano (More
curios). We recommend filling up with fuel in Xai-xai.
A good view is to be had towards the lakes as you come through Quissico
a well as over the bridge at Inharime. About 40 km further you will find
a sign reading LINDELA. This is about 240 km after Xai-xa.To the left
will lead to Maxixe and is the road north. For Inhambane you turn right
and follow for 40 km into Inhambane.
As you enter Inhambane, carry on in Avenida (road) Marginal, until you
reach the concrete jetty and turn right into Avenida Republica. It’s
a main road and there’s probably not a sign marking it. You will
pass some banks and a filling station. Carry on up to the circle. Keep
straight and turn right at the opposite side off the circle. 500m up the
road a sign leads to the airport and then follow the tar up to a pub called
Babalaza on the right. Keep left at the fork (the road gravel road). 9
km down this road you will find a major gravel/sand road on the right
at a big tree leading to the lighthouse and lodges. Lot’s of signposts
here. Carry on with this road towards the cell phone tower, the first
lodge on the left hand side JUST after the cell tower is FARAWAY.
