Tips when travelling through Mozambique:
Inhambane, the name meaning ‘the place of the friendly
people’, is one of the oldest ports on the Eastern Coast of
Africa, where, back in the early 16th century, Portuguese explorers
established a trading post for slave traders. Ancient sailors would
take advantage of the calm estuary to stop over, buy goods and replenish
for
their voyages ahead. Even the Famous Vasco De Gama made Inhambane’s
trading post a regular place to stop over. Although ships don’t
often visit Inhambane’s port… The harbor still has the
largest fleet of working dhow’s to this day!
Health and Immunisation
A course of anti-malaria tablet is strongly advised. Vaccinations
against hepatitis A, polio tetanus and typhoid are also recommended.
Currency
Mozambique’s currency is the Metical. Banks and Foreign Exchange
Bureau will exchange any recognized currency while credit cards
are widely accepted and traveler’s cheques in US dollars and
South African rand are accepted in the major centres. Most city
banks have ATM machines from which local currency may be
withdrawn at all hours.
What to take
Don’t forget to take the camera, camcorder and binoculars.
Stock. Also bring some insect repellent for
spraying on exposed areas of skin at dusk. Sunglasses, suntan lotions
and possibly lip-balm should also be
packed. If you do forget something, most accessories can be bought
in major centres.
Engen Garage before The Border
This would be the recommended place to do Third Party Insurance;
Global Alliance (GA) does most of the Border paperwork for you,
making the process a little quicker. The cost would be R150.00 for
insurance. At this garage you can also purchase the following required
travelling accessories:
• Reflective Jacket
• Two Red Triangles
• ZA Sticker
At the Border
The following steps are required to cross the border, there will
be several people at the border that will try and assist you at
a low cost, if you choose to use one please take care as they tend
to cost a bit more at the end.
1. S.A. Border Counter 5: Vehicle Registration – you will
need your SARS forms and your vehicle ticket.
2. Counter 6: Passports – Please make sure that all travelers
are present as they will not stamp unless this is done.
